Former Michigan State University tennis standout and all-Big Ten performer Christine Bader has been named the new women’s tennis head coach at the University of Evansville. She replaces Steve Brockriede, who resigned last month after four years as head coach in order to pursue his career as a club professional.

 “We are very pleased that Christine has chosen to become the head women’s tennis coach at the University of Evansville,” said Director of Athletics John Stanley, who also serves as assistant tennis coach. “Christine had an outstanding career at Michigan State and has all of the qualities it takes to be successful as a head coach. She will be a welcome addition to our community and the University.”

Bader graduated from Michigan State in May with a bachelor’s degree in business management. At age 21, she is the youngest head coach in UE’s Division I history. The Okemos, Michigan native earned all-Big Ten honors this past spring as a senior, becoming just the third Spartan in MSU women’s tennis history to receive the honor twice in their career.  Bader received her first all-Big Ten selection during her sophomore year when she became the first first-team selection from Michigan State since 1993.

Bader was also named the team’s Most Valuable Player during her senior season posting a record of 18-14 at number one singles and doubles. She is one of only three Spartans to earn a national ranking, finishing this past season ranked at #113 in singles. Overall, the Spartans finished the 2008 season ranked 61st nationally. Off the court, Bader earned Academic All-Big Ten honors three times during her playing career while also being named to the Dean’s list at Michigan State. Her poise and presence on and off the court earned her the Big Ten Sportsmanship award in women’s tennis in 2005 and 2007.

“I am very excited to join the tennis program at Evansville,” said Bader. “The school has a lot to offer, and I am glad that I will be able to contribute. I am happy to have John Stanley as my assistant, and I am looking forward to a great season ahead and working with the great staff and student-athletes at the University of Evansville.”

“I couldn’t be more proud of Christine and the much deserved recognition,” said Michigan State women’s tennis head coach Erica Perkins. “She is a great student, athlete, role model, and always a true Spartan. We will miss her tremendously next year, but look forward to the contributions she will make in the world.”

A three-time team captain of the Spartans, Bader has instructed youth with their developmental skills as a Nike tennis camp instructor for the past three years at Michigan State, University of Alabama, and the College of William and Mary, while also having time to give private lessons.

“We have a good blend of returning players along with additions to the team this year,” said Stanley. “I am confident that Christine will be able to lead them on and off the court because of her enthusiasm, tennis acumen, and interest in the individual success of our student-athletes.”
