Vallverdu and Hurricanes Advance at ITA Southeast Regionals
Sunday, 10/21/2007

Vallverdu and a pair of doubles teams still alive in regional action.

Junior All-American Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) advanced to Monday's singles semifinals and a pair of Hurricane doubles teams are still alive as the University of Miami continues to play strong tennis at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regionals at the University of Kentucky.

Vallverdu used straight sets to knock off his first two opponents, cruising past Samford's Renan Silveira, 6-3, 6-2, and Auburn's Alexsey Tsyrenov, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to Saturday's Round of 16. In Vallverdu's third match of the tournament, he defeated host Kentucky's Bruno Agostinelli, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals, where he handily picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over LSU's Ian Zelezny.

With his fourth-straight win of the tournament, Vallverdu advances to Monday's 9 a.m. semifinals to face Georgia's Nate Schnugg. The winner proceeds to the 1 p.m. regional final to take on the victor of the other semifinal match between a pair of Mississippi players - Erling Tveit and Matthias Wellermann.

Vallverdu also continues competition in doubles play, as the junior and freshman Carl Sunberg (Oslo, Norway) take on Georgia State's Nejc Podkrajsek and Anze Cevka in Sunday's Round of 16. The winners of that match face Florida's Nestor Briceno and Alex Lacroix in the quarterfinals later in the day. Vallverdu and Sunberg advanced to the Round of 16 after a pair of hard-fought wins over Ole Miss' Robbye Poole and Jakob Klaeson (9-8) and USF's Ales Svigelj and Diego Toledo.

Miami's tandem of senior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.) and junior David Rosenfeld (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) have already earned a berth in Sunday's quarterfinals, courtesy of Saturday's 8-5 Round of 16 win over Alabama's Sammy Struyf and Saketh Myneni. The duo was victorious over LSU's Kevin Dessauer and Ian Zelezny, 8-4, in the Round of 32 and dominated Kentucky's Alberto Gonzalez and Will Beck, 8-2, in the opening Round of 64.

Rosenfeld was also strong in singles play, advancing to the Round of 32 before getting eliminated with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Ole Miss' Erling Tveit. In the singles Round of 64, the junior transfer defeated Florida's Johnny Hamui, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
