An inspired effort wasn’t enough as the Albion College men’s tennis team was defeated by perennial Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association power Kalamazoo College, 6-3, inside the Ungrodt Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon.
The Britons seized the early lead by winning two of the three doubles contests. Neil Forster and Jon Vandenberg cruised to an 8-3 victory in the first flight, and Andrew Lulek and Nate Marshall hung on for a 9-7 win in the third flight. Albion came within a tiebreaker of winning in the second flight and sweeping the doubles contests.
Albion still had a chance after Forster came back from a set down to win the No. 1 singles match by scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Despite extending two other singles matches to three sets, Albion was unable to pull the upset of the 13th-ranked team in Division III.
Albion will take a break from league play Saturday when it travels for a match against the University of Chicago.
