The Albion College men's tennis team will have the No. 3 seed for this weekend's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament after suffering a 7-2 loss to Calvin College on the courts adjacent to the Dow Recreation & Wellness Center.
Albion will meet the loser of Wednesday's match between Alma College and Tri-State University in first round action in the MIAA Tournament on Friday. Albion will meet Calvin in the semifinal round of the tournament if it scores a first round victory.
The Britons fell into an early hole as they lost all three doubles contests. Brandon Still (Grosse Pointe Woods/Grosse Pointe North) and Jon Vandenberg (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids) mounted a comeback in the first flight, winning three games in a row to close their deficit to 7-6 against Steve DeMaagd and Marcus Zeilstra. The rally fizzled as Zeilstra held serve for the match.
Calvin led 5-0 when Vandenberg and Ben Miller (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory) finished off their singles rivals for Albion's two points of the match. Vandenberg scored a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over DeMaagd in the third flight, and Miller was a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Matthew De Vlieger in the fourth flight.
