Albion College is headed to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships for the fifth time in the past six years after eking out a 5-4 victory over Calvin College in the championship match of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The Britons had already clinched at least a share of the MIAA season championship by defeating the Knights during the regular season. Albion has won the last four MIAA titles, and it has claimed league crowns five of the past six years (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008).
Albion struggled in doubles action, but an 8-6 win by the No. 1 team of Vic Seiter (Grosse Pointe Farms/Grosse Pointe South) and Shelley Zamler (Beverly Hills/Groves) gave the Britons much needed energy heading into singles play.
The Britons needed four wins in singles play to win the match and they received wins from Zamler, Seiter, and Emily and Anna Gundersen (Whitehall/Whitehall). All four boast gaudy singles records - Zamler is 16-4, Seiter is 15-3, Emily Gundersen is 17-0, and Anna Gundersen is 15-3.
