Lenz, doubles team fall on first day of main draw action.
Baylor Completes Play at Futures of Mansfield Event
MANSFIELD, Texas - The Baylor men's tennis team's two participants, Julian Lenz and Robert Verzaal, were eliminated at the USTA Pro Circuit's Futures of Mansfield event at the Walnut Creek Country Club on Tuesday.
Lenz was beaten in the first round of singles main draw action by eighth-seeded Fritz Wolmarans, 6-1, 6-2. The Baylor freshman was on the brink of winning all three of the match's first games, but Wolmarans was able to rebound and take each game for a 3-0 lead in the match. Lenz was never able to recover and lost his first at the event, after winning wild card tournament last week to earn a place in the main draw.
"Julian was matched up against a guy that was super physical," head coach Matt Knoll said. "It was a match where Julian had some opportunities in the first set, but wasn't able to convert them. The other guy seemed to always serve big when Julian had a chance. In the second set, Julian was able to right the ship and play better towards the end of the match."
After his singles match, Lenz partnered with teammate Robert Verzaal for the first time this season in the first round of doubles main draw play. The pair was ousted 6-3, 6-2 by the duo of Mark Oljaca and Phillip Simmonds.
"Our doubles team competed hard the whole time," Knoll said. "They fought hard from beginning to end, so I was really proud of that. It was just a matter of execution. They just missed a few balls that they need to make. The team they played was really good and didn't give them any free passes."
Baylor will now return to Waco for several days of practice, before heading to the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by TCU in Fort Worth, Texas. The event begins on Saturday and runs through Tuesday, Oct. 23.
