Burgic Tallies Two Wins At ITA All-American
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Baylor women’s tennis sophomore Ema Burgic picked up a pair of victories, while teammate Jordan Sanford dropped her first match in the pre-qualifying draw at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships on Saturday.
“The challenging part of coaching multiple players is that some are going to win and some are going to lose,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “It was a day with mixed emotions.”
In the first round, Burgic earned a straight-set victory against Columbia junior Bianca Sanon 6-1, 6-0. Following that win, Burgic faced sixth-seeded and 91st-ranked Janine Weinreich of Nebraska. Burgic needed only two sets again to pull off the upset, 6-4, 6-3.
“Ema played a great offensive game today,” Scrivano said. “She was able to set up the point with her serve and her forehand. She is finally healthy, which gives her so many more options in her game. It is an exciting time for her.”
Burgic will now face 16th-seeded and 113th-ranked Erin Stephens of Mississippi at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday. If Burgic wins that match she will earn one of eight spots into the qualifying draw.
Sanford was defeated by University of Iowa junior Ruth Seaborne in the first round 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
“Obviously it’s a tough loss for Jordaan, but losing is a powerful motivator,” Scrivano said. “Today she ran into an opponent that matched up extremely well against her and was able to exploit a lot of Jordaan’s weaknesses. There are a lot of things we can learn from that match, and it fits in with exactly what we’re working on with Jordaan’s game.”
Sanford and Burgic, who earned ITA All-American honors last season in doubles with Nina Secerbegovic, will compete in the 32-team doubles main draw from Oct. 4-7. The pair won its only match together last season.
