Baylor will have four singles players and two doubles pairs in the field.
WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team will serve as the host site for the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships from Oct. 19-23 at the Hurd Tennis Center. Baylor is one of 12 regional sites across the country.
"It's just going to make it more comfortable for our team to be playing here," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "They'll be able to keep some of their routine when they're home, but there are also some distractions when you play at home. That's going to be something they'll have to manage this weekend."
The Lady Bears will place four players in the 128-player singles draw, as well as two pairs in the 64-team doubles draw. Singles play will kick off after the first round of doubles action on Friday, which begins at 8 a.m. Junior Jordaan Sanford, sophomores Ema Burgic and Megan Horter, and freshman Victoria Kisialeva, who is making her first college tournament appearance, will compete in the singles draw.
In the opening round, Kisialeva faces Sam Houston State's Madeline Mortimore, and Horter plays Texas' Juliana Gajic. Seventh-seeded Burgic and fifteenth-seeded Sanford received a first-round bye.
On the doubles side, second-seeded Burgic and Sanford earned a first-round bye, and will play their first match on Saturday at 8 a.m. Horter will team with Kisialeva, and will face Texas' Gajic and Annat Rabinovich at 8 a.m. on Friday.
"This tournament is going to be a really big deal for these players because they're going to have to figure out how to deal with the extra pressure that comes with playing matches," Scrivano said. "We're hoping that we start growing as a team and start figuring out some of these things."
The winners of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships will go on to play in the ITA National Indoor Championships from Nov. 8 -11 in New York.
