WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team notched victories in two doubles matches and one singles match on the second day of action at the HEB Invitational on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
In doubles action, Ema Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva won their second straight match at the event by defeating Jackie Kasler and Emily Flickinger of Auburn, 8-5. New partners Megan Horter and Alex Leatu also routed Auburn's pairing of Pleun Burgmans and Michala Kucharova, 8-4.
"We definitely were better in doubles today," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "It was the first time Megan and Alex played together, and they did a great job. Especially for Alex, she learned a lot from yesterday's doubles match. With Victoria and Ema, I don't think it was one of their better performances. They're going to have to pick it up. The competition's only going to get tougher down the road."
Horter kicked off the day's singles action for the Lady Bears, and defeated Houston's Elena Kordolaimi, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Horter secured a victory in the first set by taking four straight games, after trailing 5-3 in the set. During the second set, after Kordolaimi tied up the games at 5-5, but Horter won the final two games to win the match.
"That's a real impressive win for Megan," Scrivano said. "Megan's our most improved player from last season. She put in the work in the off-season, and she deserves all the credit in the world. She stuck with the plan, kept believing her game would come together, and this weekend is showing what a player's capable of when they really put in the work. She's having a great year, period."
Leatu was the lone loss of the day against Celia Fraser of Houston, 5-7, 6-1, 10-8. Leatu took the first set after battling back from an early three-game deficit, but struggled in the second set and dropped the contest in the third-set tiebreaker.
"Frasier is a quality opponent," Scrivano said. "When you're coming back from injury, there's always going to be a lot of rust. There's no substitute for the pressure of match play. She did about as well as you can do at this stage. She'll only get better, that's the good news. We know what she's capable of, and today's loss is not a big deal."
The Lady Bears will be back in action on Sunday for the final day of competition at the HEB Invitational. Doubles action gets underway indoors at the Hawkins Tennis Center at 9 a.m. with singles action to follow.
