Trey Bogue was appointed the head coach of the Bethune-Cookman College men's and women's tennis teams on September 10, 2001.
The Columbia, South Carolina native has an extensive background in both coaching and playing tennis. Attending Presbyterian College in Clinton S.C., Coach Bogue competed on the men’s tennis team and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in psychology and a minor in economics. Shortly after graduating, Coach Bogue became certified with the United States Professional Tennis Association, and is currently still an active member.
Coach Bogue began his coaching career at Augusta State University in 1989. He turned around the men’s tennis team from a 1-44 record to a 17-8 record by his third year. During his time at Augusta State, Coach Bogue was the Chairman of the Big South Tennis Conference from 1990-1991. In 1993, he became the head coach of the women’s tennis team at Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina. After a one-year stint, he moved on to a head coaching position at Spartanburg Methodist Junior College in Spartanburg, S.C. Here he coached his team to being ranked 8th nationally among all junior colleges and also earned conference coach of the year honors.
Last year, the B-CC women’s tennis team won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship under the leadership of former head coach Ian Payton. Coach Bogue understands that he has the task of keeping this winning tradition alive and possibly even taking the ladies further in the NCAA tournament. “I really never stepped into a coaching job with this much talent,” said Coach Bogue. “We have a good sound group of both men and women.”
The men’s tennis team fell short of a MEAC championship last season. Coach Bogue understands that there is still work that has to be done in order to repeat the women’s championship and acquire a championship for the men. “We are hoping we can sign players in January to fill some holes,” said Coach Bogue. “We also need more intensity in our doubles play. The doubles point, sets the tone for the whole match. If we come out and play aggressive we are going to find ourselves up more than we are down.”
After taking a break from coaching and becoming involved in sales from 1996-2001, a period of five-years, coach Bogue is happy to be back in the sport that he loves. “I realized that coaching is what I really needed to do,” Coach Bogue said. “I am real excited about being here at B-CC. Back in the college coaching ranks.”
“With any head coaching position I will bring a few things management wise. But I can also bring a disciplined winning attitude.” “I wasn’t the greatest tennis player in the world. But I was always a hard worker,” said Coach Bogue.
