COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State junior Andy Bettles was named Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced, Wednesday.
Bettles, from Somerset, England, went a combined 3-1 last week as the No. 38 Broncos defeated No. 44 Minnesota, 4-3, on Feb. 9 and lost to No. 35 Louisville, 4-1, on Feb. 10. Bettles, ranked No. 28 nationally, won both of his No. 1 singles matches. He topped Minnesota's Leandro Toledo (ranked No. 63) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, and also took down Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer (ranked No. 82) 6-1, 6-3. In No. 1 doubles play, Bettles and partner Nathan Sereke turned back Minnesota's No. 24-ranked duo of Rok Bonin and Mathieu Froment, 8-5. Bettles and Sereke fell to Louisville's Albert Wagner and Alex Gornet, 8-4.
It is the first player of the week honor for any Boise State men's tennis player this season and the second such honor of Bettles' career.
The Broncos will be back in action, Friday, Feb. 22, when they travel to face No. 26 San Diego.
