Thursday, 02/27/2014

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State freshman Brendan McClain has been named Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for matches played Feb. 19-25. It is the first MW weekly accolade of McClain’s collegiate career and the third this season for Boise State.

The freshman from Ventura, Calif., went 3-0 in singles play to help guide then-No. 41 Boise State past three higher-ranked teams on its way to winning the Broncos’ second-straight Blue Gray National Tennis Classic championship in Montgomery, Ala.
McClain did not drop a set during the three-day tournament playing on court five for Boise State to improve his overall record to 14-6 and dual mark to 9-2.

Playing in the No. 5 singles slot, McClain defeated Alabama’s Nikko Madregallejo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to help the Broncos sweep the No. 36 Crimson Tide 4-0.
In the semifinal against No. 21 Clemson, McClain glided past Luke Johnson, also in straight sets, 6-5 (6), 6-1, helping Boise State rally from three points down to win the match 4-3.

McClain won his third and final singles match of the weekend over Jean Baptiste Mateo of VCU, 6-3, 6-4. The straight-set victory enabled the Broncos to climb back from a 2-0 deficit to claim the championship, 4-2.
