College Tennis Teams - Boise State University - Team News - No. 20 Boise State Hosts No. 42 Minnesota

Boise State (10-3, 1-0 MW) returns home for the first time in six weeks to host 42nd-ranked Minnesota (6-5) out of the Big Ten Conference. This week's match will be hosted by the Boise Racquet and Swim Club at 1116 N. Cole Road in Boise starting at noon/12 p.m. (Mountain).

QUICK LOOK AT MINNESOTA

The Golden Gophers enter the week ranked 42nd nationally.
They have been streaky in the first half of the season but enter Sunday's contest on a two-match win streak.
Leading Minnesota in singles are Leandro Toledo who is ranked 84th nationally with a 8-3 duals record playing on court one. Ruben Weber is 5-3 for the Golden Gophers on court two.
The doubles team of Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg is 8-1 at the No. 1 position and are ranked 22nd nationally.

BRONCOS SURGE UP NATIONAL RANKINGS

After winning their second-consecutive Blue Gray National Tennis Classic championship in Montgomery, Ala., on Feb. 23rd Boise State catapulted 26 spots up the national rankings to No. 15.
Following last weekend's 5-2 loss at No. 43 Oregon the Broncos slipped a little to No. 20 in this week's latest ITA rankings.

BETTLES NATIONALLY RANKED

Bronco senior Andy Bettles is ranked 83rd nationally in singles during the most recent ITA rankings for singles released (Feb. 25).
He enters the Minnesota match with and overall mark of 17-8 and 6-5 in duals while playing on court one.

BRONCOS REGIONALLY RANKED

Singles: Boise State has four Broncos ranked in the top 20 in the ITA's Mountain Region led by Andy Bettles at No. 3, Thomas Tenreiro at No. 9, Garrett Patton No. 10 and Brendan McClain at No. 14.
Doubles: The team of Garrett Patton and Brendan McClain are ranked as the number two doubles pair in the region.

QUICK LOOK AT BOISE STATE

The Record: Boise State is 10-3 overall entering this weekend and saw a nine-match win streak snapped last weekend at Oregon. Last year the Broncos went 20-10 overall and 8-1 in conference.
The Broncos at Home: Boise State is 1-1 at home in 2014. Traditionally the Broncos are hard to beat in Boise. They went 10-1 at home during the 2012-13 season.
Boise State on the Road: The Broncos are 9-2 on the road in 2014 with its two losses coming at then-seventh-ranked Baylor (Jan. 25) 4-0, as well as last week's 5-2 loss at No. 43 Oregon (March 2).
Roster Review: Boise State returned an experienced squad last fall which has helped the program move up the national rankings. Boise State welcomed back two seniors in Andy Bettles and Nathan Sereke, two juniors, three sophomores, as well as added two freshmen in Brendan McClain and Abe Hewko.

TOUGH SCHEDULE

To Boise State's credit it has played an extremely tough schedule which included five straight weeks on the road where the Broncos won nine consecutive matches before finishing the stretch 9-2.
They have faced eight nationally ranked opponents to date and have gone 5-3 against them.
They have recorded victories over No. 21 Clemson (W 4-3), No. 37 VCU (W 4-2), No. 36 Alabama (W 4-0), No. 45 Utah (W 5-2) and No. 32 Drake (W 4-1), all away from Boise. Note, the rankings are what they were at time of match.
The Broncos lone losses are to No. 7 Baylor (L 4-0) at Waco, Texas, in the second week; at home against No. 32 Northwestern (L 5-2) on the opening weekend; and last Sunday in a 5-2 loss to No. 43 Oregon.
Boise State still has four more teams in the current national rankings on their schedule which include: No. 42 Minnesota (March 9) in Boise, No. 48 Virginia Tech (March 15) in Boise, No. 72 Marquette (March 22) in Boise, as well as conference rival No. 69 San Diego State (April 12) in Boise.
Boise State has played and defeated No. 56 New Mexico (Jan. 31) who was not ranked at the time.
They will also play a few teams that have been in and out of the rankings this season including Stanford and MW member Air Force. The Broncos may also face Nevada in the conference tournament in late April at Fresno, Calif.

SELECT DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
Andy Bettles and Thomas Tenreiro

The doubles team of senior Andy Bettles and sophomore Thomas Tenreiro has been the most consistent duo for the Broncos this spring going 8-4 in duals and 7-4 on court two (1-0 at No. 1).
Bettles and Tenreiro are 10-5 this year as a doubles team.

Patton and McClain have played at No. 1 doubles for Boise State where they have split 10 dual matches and are currently 5-5.
As a tandem Patton, a junior, and McClain, a freshman, have gone 12-7 overall in the 2013-14 year.

Sereke and Mitchell have seen the most action on court three where they are 5-3 in duals and 6-4 overall in 2013-14.

SELECT SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
Andy Bettles

The senior from Somerset, England, won his 100th singles match as a Bronco when he defeated Oregon's Robin Cambier 6-4, 7-5 last Sunday in Eugene, Ore.
He has played every match this season on court one where he is 6-5 overall in duals to go with a 17-8 singles mark for the year.
Bettles is 4-4 versus nationally ranked opponents as a senior.
He was also given the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Sportsmanship Award.

The sophomore from Miami, Fla., has been solid this season going 12-7 overall and 6-3 on court three in duals.
Tenreiro earned back-to-back Mountain West Player of the Week honors for the weeks of Jan. 29-Feb. 2 and Feb. 5-11.

The true freshman is having an outstanding campaign for Boise State going 16-6 on the year and a team-best 11-2 in duals this spring.
The native of Ventura, Calif., was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 19-25 after helping the Broncos win their second-consecutive Blue Gray Classic title.
McClain was named the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Most Valuable Player after going undefeated in singles, in fact he did not drop a set during the tournament.
