Broncos Defeat Cal Poly to Extend Win Streak to Eight

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The 19th-ranked Broncos extended their win streak to eight straight as Boise State dispatched Cal Poly 6-1 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference men’s tennis match at San Luis Obispo, Calif. After claiming the doubles point 2-0, the Broncos received singles victories by Andy Bettles, Nathan Sereke, Thomas Tenreiro, Brian Foley and Toby Mitchell. The victory improved Boise State to 18-3 on the year.
 
Bettles and Tenreiro earned the first doubles victory for the Broncos of the day when they downed Cal Poly’s Mark Comuzzo and Matt Thomson 8-5 on court one. The Boise State duo improved to a team-best 16-5 on the year and 14-4 in duals this spring.
 
Brian Foley and Brendan McClain clinched the team point for the Blue and Orange with a 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Ben Donovan and Jurgen DeJaeger. The No. 2 doubles match was not completed once the team point was decided, but Boise State’s Sereke and Mitchell were leading 6-4 when play stopped.
 
Bettles, ranked 86th nationally, gave the Broncos an early 2-0 team lead when his opponent retired in the first set because of injury. Sereke extended the Bronco advantage later when he recorded a straight-set 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles over Cal Poly’s Donovan. Sereke is now 12-9 on the year, while Bettles moved to 21-12.
 
Cal Poly’s lone win of the day came on court four where the Mustangs’ Jurgen DeJaeger tallied a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Broncos’ Brendan McClain, snapping the freshman’s 11-match win streak. McClain is now 16-3 this spring and 21-7 on the year.
 
Up 3-1, Boise State clinched the team victory on court five where Foley won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 over Thomson. Foley is now 17-7 overall and 10-3 in duals.
 
The final two singles matches also went to Boise State starting with court three where Tenreiro rallied from one set down to win 6-7 (1), 6-2, 11-9. Mitchell won the last match decided on court six in three sets 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Tenreiro improved to 16-9 on the year, while Mitchell went to 15-7.
