 Paul Holbach

"Hobie" has been a professional coach for his entire adult life. He has coached numerous nationally ranked juniors, collegiate champions and professionals on the pro circuit. Hobie attended Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota where he was an NCAA Division III All-American, NAIA All-American and a NCAA Academic All-American. He helped win the National Team Title for Gustavus in 1980 as well as winning the NCAA Division III Doubles Title in 1980.

He has coached in St.Louis, Missouri for several years where he directed the Sunset Tennis Center; one of the leading junior development programs in the nation. He coached primarily in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California for most of his adult life.

Some of Hobie's pupils included: Lindsay Davenport(ages 12-16), Kimberly Po(ranked as high as top 30 in the world), Debbie Graham(1992 WTA Rookie of the Year), Heather Willens(three-time NCAA All-American at Stanford), Stella Sampras(1988 NCAA Doubles Champion for UCLA), Marianne Werdel(ranked top 30 in the world), Annie Menees(National 14 & under Indoors Champion), Amanda Craddock (Ga Tech) and many, many more.

Hobie was hired by Bowdoin in 2007. His wife Cinda Gurney-Holbach is also a teaching professional and was 1993 NCAA Division I singles runner-up for the University of North Carolina. They live in Maine where they raise their 3 pugs; Sox, Kenya and McKinley.
