Why BYU Women's Tennis
FACILITIES The Cougars enjoy some of the finest tennis facilities in the country. A one million dollar renovation of the outdoor courts in 1995 gave BYU 14 fully lighted courts with full backdrops. The courts are set in banks of two or four for easy viewing.
The four indoor courts have one of the best lighting systems in the country and cushioned chair-back seats for comfortable viewing. The facility has been the training grounds for over 30 All-Americans over the years. The indoor facility plays host to BYU home matches during the winter months and during inclement weather.
COACHING STAFF As the 2001 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year, Craig Manning brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the BYU head coaching position.
An active participant in BYU tennis for the last 11 years, Coach Manning played at BYU from 1991 to 1995, finishing with a 35-31 singles record and a 21-25 doubles record. He served as a graduate assistant to men's tennis coach Jim Osborne, then became an assistant to the women's team in 1996. He was named the head coach in 1999.
Holly Parkinson Hasler begins her first season as BYU's assistant women's tennis coach.
ATHLETIC TRAINING BYU has a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center with nearly 10,000 feet of working space that ranks among the best in the nation. It features 106 stations to accommodate both female and male athletes.
BYU's strength and conditioning staff includes certified athletic trainers, a sports physical therapist, a team physician, team orthopedic surgeons and a wide variety of other medical specialists. The staff has experienced excellent results through its computer-analyzed combination of a strict weight and conditioning program, a carefully planned diet and sufficient rest.
UNIVERSITY Brigham Young University, the largest private university in the nation, has an outstanding academic reputation and a high commitment to athletics.
ACADEMICS BYU has a high commitment to graduation, with a full-time Academic Advisement staff, mentor and tutor programs, and is a member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.
EXPOSURE Many of BYU's student athletic competitions are broadcast on BYU Television, which is available in 17 million homes nationwide via Dish Network and DirectTV and on cable in Northern Utah, Arizona and Nevada. The network is expanding throughout the world, gaining viewers in England, Europe, and Latin America.
2001-2002 SEASON The BYU women's tennis team had a lot at stake in the 2001-2002 season, most important of which was defending the Mountain West Conference title. The Cougars had not lost a conference match in 2001, and so the 2002 team had expectations right from the start. But despite a valiant effort by the team, a tough schedule and some major injuries were too much to overcome for this year's Cougars and they failed to repeat as champions and did not advance at the NCAA Championships for the second straight year.
