Bears Move into Regional Round of 16
MORAGA, Calif. - California placed three singles players and three doubles teams in the round of 16 on Saturday at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships in action at the Moraga Country Club and the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex at Saint Mary's. Brothers Riki and Ben McLachlan advanced in both singles and doubles, as did junior Campbell Johnson, who paired with freshman Mads Engsted in doubles. The Bear duo of sophomores Andrew Scholnick and Gregory Bayane also advanced.
The second seed in the singles draw, junior Ben McLachlan defeated Stanford's Robert Stineman in three sets, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (1), in the round of 32. Senior Riki McLachlan - one of a few players seeded 17th - beat Oregon's 10th-seeded Alex Rovello, 6-3, 7-6 (1). Johnson - the 16th seed - topped Sacramento State's 17th-seeded Alexandr Malko, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Engsted - also seeded 17th - fell to Oregon's 11th-seeded Robin Cambier in a tight match, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (5).
In the first round of singles consolation matches, Scholnick lost to Portland's Alex Ferrero, 7-5, 6-1, while freshman Jordan Smith fell to San Francisco's Jonathan Knowlman, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (3), in the second round.
While day one of the tournament featured only singles, day two included two rounds of doubles. Scholnick-Bayane beat Eastern Washington's Eduardo Martinez-Joseph Cohen, 8-3, and then upset the ninth-seeded James Markiewicz-Tuomas Manner of Saint Mary's, 8-4. After a first-round bye, fifth-seeded Johnson-Engsted topped Pacific's Erik Cedarwall-Valentm Goncalves, 8-6, in the round of 32. Seventh-seeded McLachlan-McLachlan also had a first-round bye and later defeated Pacific's Ben Mirkin-Trevor James, 8-6.
In the doubles round of 64, Cal freshmen Jordan Smith and Wyatt Houghton lost to Sacramento State's Sean Kolar-Tom Miller, 8-2.
The five-day tournament continues on Sunday.
