Three Cal Doubles Teams Move into the Quarterfinals at the MCC and Saint Mary's
MORAGA, Calif. - California junior Ben McLachlan moved into the singles semifinals and three teams of Golden Bears reached the doubles quarterfinals on Sunday at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships held at the Moraga Country Club and the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex at Saint Mary's.
Seeded second, McLachlan knocked off the Cardinal's fifth-seeded Matt Kandath, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinal round, after topping Gonzaga's 14th-seeded Alvaro Nazal, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 16. McLachlan also teamed with his brother, senior Riki McLachlan, to form Cal's seventh-seeded pair, which did not allow a point to Sacramento State's ninth-seeded Aliaksandr Malko and Marek Marksoo in an 8-0 win in the doubles round of 16.
Cal's fifth-seeded duo of junior Campbell Johnson and freshman Mads Engsted almost matched the McLachlans' feat, winning 8-1 over Santa Clara's Matt Kecki and Tom Pham. Sophomore Andrew Scholnick and Gregory Bayane won, 8-5, over fourth-seeded John Morrissey-Trey Strobel of Stanford.
Back in the singles draw, in a battle of 17 seeds, Riki McLachlan fell to Stanford's Nolan Paige, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, while 16th-seeded Johnson lost to Santa Clara's seventh-seeded Ilya Osintsev, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
In consolation action, Cal freshman Jordan Smith suffered a 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (7), loss to Eastern Washington's Tomas Aranquiz in singles, and, paired with freshman Wyatt Houghton in doubles, lost to Seif Elsherbini-Thomas Hunt, 8-2.
The five-day tournament hits its fourth day on Monday.
