BERKELEY – Tyler Browne, who recently completed his fifth season as an assistant coach at California, earned a promotion to associate head coach, men’s tennis head coach Peter Wright announced on Friday. The Golden Bears are rewarding the Cal alumnus for his work in recruiting, fundraising and assisting Wright in coaching the team to three consecutive NCAA Championship round of 16 appearances.

 

This season, Browne’s work was instrumental in Cal producing a 16-10 record (5-1/tied for second in the Pac-12) and another deep run into the postseason

 

“Tyler is a wonderful teacher who has incredible coaching instincts,” Wright said. “At Cal, he has been a team member, team captain, graduate assistant coach and full-time assistant coach, so he knows his way around Berkeley, and he knows what it takes to be a student-athlete at Cal. He is a tremendous role model for our guys, and on top of it all, he's still a professional level player. He's been a big help throughout our $2.7 million fundraising campaign, and he has also been incredibly effective in terms of identifying talent and recruits for our program. Tyler is fully engaged in helping our program get to the next level, and I'm pleased to name him as my associate head coach.”

 

In addition to his work with recruiting, fundraising and coaching, Browne’s other responsibilities include budget creation and monitoring, compliance, and community engagement.

 

A Cal player from 2004-07, Browne spent a year as an undergraduate student assistant coach for the Bears before Cal hired him as an assistant coach on Aug. 11, 2008. As an undergraduate student assistant, Browne helped Cal achieve a 13-11 overall record and fourth place in the Pac-10 conference with a 4-3 mark in 2008. Also in 2008, the Bears received a bid to the NCAA tournament for the eighth consecutive season and advanced to the second round.

 

As a player, Browne posted a 72-59 overall singles record and added 46 doubles victories in four years on the court. He was ranked as high as No. 56 in singles and No. 12 in doubles with partner Conor Niland. As a junior, he was selected to the 2006 All-Pac-10 team and received honorable mention in 2007. Browne served as the team captain during the 2006-07 season and was an active member of the Bear Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

 

A native of Walnut Creek, Calif., Browne received a degree in sociology in 2008 and currently resides in San Francisco.
