Cal Tops Sac State to Move into NCAA Round Two
Tuesday, 05/15/2012

BERKELEY - The ninth-ranked California women's tennis team (18-6) turned in a 4-0 result against No. 57 Sacramento State (17-10) in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday, May 11. The Golden Bears took the sting out of their first-round opponent when sophomore Alice Duranteau earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Andrea Gomez Carus at No. 6 singles to deliver Cal's fourth and clinching point.

"I think it was really important for us just to get back on court after finals," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "Despite the fact that we've been in exams, I feel we've had a really good week of practice. I think we knew what to expect and we expected them to play better than they did when we met them earlier in the year; and they did. They have some seniors on this squad and we knew they'd all give their best efforts, today. We're happy with the win, and it's always nice to get that first win under our belts in the tournament, but now we've got to turn our attention to getting ready for tomorrow."

The Bears got started with a win at the top doubles court where their 15th-ranked duo of senior Jana Juricova and freshman Zsofi Susanyi came back from a 3-0 deficit to earn an 8-4 victory against the Hornets' 74th-ranked team of Rebeca Delgado and Tatsiana Kapshai.

No more than a minute later, Cal claimed the doubles point when its fifth-ranked tandem of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting came off the courts with an 8-3 win on court two against Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk. It was the 30th victory for the Bear tandem and their 15th win in the last 16 outings. Goransson and Schutting are now 30-5 on the season.

At court three, Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander held a 6-3 lead against Katharina Knoebl and Sophie Lohscheidt when their match was abandoned.

The Bears flexed their muscle as they claimed first-set victories on all six singles courts. At No. 6 singles, Duranteau gave up just one game on her way to a 6-1 win while at the top court, eighth-ranked Juricova fought off Kapshai to earn a 6-3 win. But it was 30th-ranked Schutting who tacked up Cal's second point of the day when she completed a 6-2, 6-0 win against Lohscheidt at No. 3 singles.

The last time Juricova met Kapshai in a singles match, she earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Kapshai showed why she belonged on the top court as she battled with the Cal senior, this time. Juricova had an answer, however, as she completed a 6-3, 6-3 win with a service ace to give the Bears a 3-0 lead in the dual.

With first-set victories in hand, the Bears held leads in all six second sets, with four on the verge of completion. 13th-ranked Susanyi was up, 5-2, over Delgado at court two, and No. 48 Davis had a 5-3 lead against Meliuk at court four, but it was Duranteau who put the final nail in the coffin as she completed her 6-1, 6-3 win.

In the day's early match, No. 41-ranked Pepperdine (16-8) upset 22nd-ranked Purdue (18-7), 4-0, to advance to the second round. The Bears faced the Waves earlier this spring and claimed a 5-2 win on a three-set victory by Davis who played at No. 2 singles. That win kick-started a 10-match winning streak for Cal who holds a 28-6 advantage in the all-time series with Pepperdine.

Cal and Pepperdine will face each other in a match set to begin not before 3 p.m. PT on Saturday, May 12, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Please visit CalBears.com for more information and live scoring links.
