Cal Surfs Waves to Reach NCAA Round of 16
BERKELEY - The ninth-ranked California women's tennis team (19-6) held its ground to claim a 4-0 win against No. 41 Pepperdine (16-9) in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Saturday, May 12. The Golden Bears advance to the round of 16 for the sixth consecutive year and will face 26th-ranked Georgia Tech (15-11) who upset eighth-seeded Alabama in its second-round match.
"Today, it was important to stay focused, and not think about going to Athens before we won the match," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "We remember that Pepperdine made runs against us, the last time we met. They are well coached and are willing to make adjustments. I was really happy to see how well our doubles teams played today, especially at court three. I think we're prepared and the ladies are looking forward to the trip out east. We're going to take things day by day and match by match, but we're very excited."
Like the first time Cal met Pepperdine, the Bears swept the doubles courts to claim the first point of the dual. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Alice Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander made short work of Ale Granillo and Megan Moore to post an 8-0 win. On court two, the Bears' fifth-ranked duo of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting sealed the doubles point on an 8-6 victory over Arianna Colffer and Ali Walters. It was the 20th dual victory for the Cal pair which leads the squad with a 31-5 mark this year.
With the doubles point secured, play was stopped at the top court where the Bears' 15th-ranked tandem of senior Jana Juricova and freshman Zsofi Susanyi held a 6-4 lead against the nation's 32nd-ranked team of Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara.
Into singles matches, the Bears rolled to wins on five out of six courts. At No. 2 singles, 13th-ranked Susanyi earned a 6-0 win in her first set against No. 105 Granillo. She later finished her off with a 6-1 count in the second set to give Cal a 2-0 lead in the dual. It was Susanyi's 35th singles win of the year.
Not to be outdone, 30th-ranked Schutting duplicated Susanyi's score and put a 6-0, 6-1 win in the books against Guillermo at court three to put the Bears ahead, 3-0. Schutting also earned her 35th singles win of the year; her sixth victory in seven matches.
Just as she had done in her first-round match, Duranteau put the finishing touches on today's victory as she completed a 6-2, 6-2 win against Moore at court six. At the top court, eighth-ranked Juricova had a 6-1, 3-1 lead over No. 62 Issara, and at court five, 67th-ranked Goransson was chomping at the bit to get her 35th win as she led Walters, 6-4, 2-1, but matches were stopped when Duranteau clinched the victory.
Looking ahead, Cal faces Georgia Tech in the round of 16 in a 6 a.m. PT match at the Dan Magill Center on Thursday, May 17, in Athens, Ga., on the campus of host University of Georgia. The Yellow Jackets upset eighth-seeded Alabama (18-4) in the second round, 4-3, as the road team in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to advance. The last time the Bears faced Georgia Tech, they earned a 4-1 win in a consolation dual on Feb. 19, 2011, at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
The Bears have a short but successful history against the Yellow Jackets. In five meetings, Cal has prevailed four times. The first time the teams faced each other, Tech earned a 4-2 win in the 2007 NCAA semifinals. Since coach Augustus arrived on campus, her squads have defeated the Yellow Jackets four times including once in 2008-09 also in the NCAA round of 16 en route to a second consecutive appearance in the title match. Cal's other three victories over Georgia Tech have come at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
