Cal Tennis to Host Cal Nike Fall Invitational
Friday, 09/28/2012

Hello and welcome back to another exciting year of California Women’s Tennis! To kick off the Fall season, the California women's tennis team will play some of the top talent in the nation as we host the 2012 Cal Nike Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex, this weekend (Sept. 28-30). The Golden Bears will welcome players from Arizona State, BYU, Fresno State, Minnesota, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's College, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, and UC Davis for a three-day tournament that will showcase three singles flights, and three doubles flights (Gold, Blue, and White).

Last year, then senior Jana Juricova claimed the invitational's singles title when she took out then junior Tayler Davis in the Gold Flight final. Juricova and then sophomore Anett Schutting brought home the doubles title for Cal with a victory over Baca and Meliuk of Sacramento State in the final. Then senior Stephany Chang was the 2011 Blue Flight singles champion beating USF’s Marina Nikolic in the final.

The tournament will feature two 32-woman singles flights (Gold and Blue) and one 16-woman singles flight (White) as well as two 16-team doubles flights (Gold and Blue) and one eight-team doubles flight (White). Play begins at 8 a.m. PT on Friday, Sept. 28, with the first round of doubles matches in all flights followed by two rounds of singles play. Championship matches will take place in the afternoon on Sunday, September 30.

Tournament draws, schedules, and results will be available www.TennisInformation.com so come out and support your Golden Bears and see the new team compete!
Zero Waste at 2012 Cal Nike Fall Invitational
The UC Berkeley campus is committed to produce zero waste by 2020. Zero Waste means that all discarded material is recycled, composted, or reused. Nothing is sent to the landfill.

Annie Goransson, a senior on the Cal Women's Tennis Team and a Society and Environment major, has worked hard promoting sustainability on campus and has made the 2012 Cal Nike Fall Invitational a designated Zero Waste event.

The Campus Recycling and Refuse Services will provide bins for compostables, recyclables and waste, and student volunteers will help fans and visitors identify what product goes where.

Finally, an exciting new development you may or may not have heard about already, our much anticipated upgrade to Hellman!

Hellman Tennis Complex Upgrade
Investing In Our Past To Advance Our Future

The Hellman Tennis Complex is the home of Cal men’s and women’s tennis programs. Hellman has served as the host facility for the 1996 Men's Rolex NorCal Regional Tournament, numerous NCAA regional competitions and was the site of the 1994 NCTA/Michael Chang Reach for the Stars tennis clinic.

Hellman Tennis Complex will soon be celebrating its 30th birthday. The most recent major improvements were made a decade ago.

Cal Tennis Meets The 21st Century
Hellman Courts proudly boast six of the best college tennis courts in the country. However, the remainder of the facility is missing the necessary infrastructure to adequately host visiting teams and tournaments or provide a fan experience equal to the quality of play. Cal Tennis has launched a vital facility upgrade that provides locker rooms for our studnet-athletes, and prime seating and public restrooms for our supportees.

Hellman Tennis Complex Upgrade
To meet our facility upgrade needs and maintain the Cal tennis program’s scholarship and operational needs, we are embarking on a two-year $2,500,000 campaign. The groundwork has been laid with an initial gift of $750,000 from Patricia and Kent Newmark. Kent, who received his B.A. and M.B.A. from Cal, was a member of both the tennis and track teams and is a member of the Big C Society.

We are actively seeking leadership gifts to complement the Newmark’s donation. Leadership gifts directed to the facility upgrade will be provided with a significant naming opportunity. With a minimum gift of $5,000 to the facility upgrade, you may leave your legacy through a name recognition on a new seat at the Hellman Tennis Complex while naming opportunities last (note: gifts to the facility upgrade are not eligible for annual seat donation credit for football and/or men’s basketball seating). All gifts, regardless of size, count towards the campaign. Gifts to the campaign that are not related to naming rights are eligible for football and/or men's basketball seat donation credit. Please contact Brian Raney, Annual Giving Manager in the Cal Athletics department, to learn more at 510-643-0888 or braney@berkeley.edu.

Hope to see you this weekend at Hellman and GO BEARS!
