Schutting Falls in National Indoor Final
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y./TEMPE, Ariz. - Anett Schutting became the third Golden Bear in the last four years to reach the singles final of the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday, but the junior Golden Bear could not hold off UCLA's third-ranked and fifth-seeded Robin Anderson, who won the championship 6-3, 6-4, at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center.
Former California star Jana Juricova won the national indoor title in 2009 and lost in the final in 2010.
In Arizona, Cal completed its play in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Sophomore Laura Posylkin fell to San Diego's Marta Stojanovic, 6-4, 6-1, in the Sparky draw first-round consolation back draw final, while in other singles action senior Tayler Davis beat Kansas State's Carli Wischoff, 3-6, 6-2, (10-4); freshman Klara Fabikova defeated ASU's Stephanie Vlad, 6-4, 6-4; freshman Lynn Chi topped Ohio State's Kara Cecil, 6-0, 6-4; junior Kelly Chui knocked off USD's Idil Haciraifoglu, 6-0, 6-1; and junior Alice Duranteau lost to Ohio State's Gabby Steele, 6-3, 7-6 (0).
In the doubles round-robin event, Davis and Fabikova defeated ASU's Vlad and Nicole Smith, 8-4; Chui-Posylkin beat Ohio State's Cecil and Fidan Manashirova, 8-1; and Chi-Duranteau fell to Ohio State's Steele and Nikki Flower, 8-3.
