Drake Men's Tennis Duo Garners ITA National Rankings
DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake men's tennis seniors Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) and James McKie (Edinburgh, Scotland) earned national recognition for their play when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its national preseason singles and doubles rankings on Monday (Sept. 10).
Posting a 51-14 combined singles/doubles mark last season, including 28-7 in singles en route to being named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, Ghorbel came in at No. 87 in the national singles tabulations.
In doubles, the first-team All-MVC tandem of Ghorbel and McKie, who registered a 14-5 record a year ago, checked in at No. 59 in the national rankings.
"It is tremendous for the guys to be recognized nationally for the hard work they put in last season," Drake head coach Davidson Kozlowski commented. "These rankings represent a great starting point for us this fall, but obviously this is just a start as the goal is to improve upon these rankings throughout the year. If we're able to do that, then we'll have a successful campaign."
The ITA also announced participant lists for the ITA All-American Championships (Sept. 29-Oct. 2). Earning pre-qualifying singles invitations were Ghorbel, McKie, senior Jean Erasmus (Windhoek, Namibia), junior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) and sophomore Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia & Herzegovina).
In doubles, the duo of Ghorbel and McKie was awarded a selection into the qualifying draw.
The Bulldogs open their fall campaign hosting the Drake Fall Invitational at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center (Sept. 21-23).
