GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke sophomore Henrique Cunha has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after defeating three ranked opponents, including the match-clinching win in the second round of the ITA National Indoor Regional.
Playing at No. 1, the ninth-ranked Cunha clinched Duke’s spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships with his 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over 14th-ranked Sebastian Fanselow of No. 21 Pepperdine. The Blue Devils defeated Pepperdine, 4-3, to capture the Durham Regional title in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Cunha also earned two ranked wins in doubles over a No. 28 Michigan duo and a No. 35 Pepperdine squad, plus a 6-3, 6-4 singles win over Michigan’s Evan King in the opening round of the ITA Regional. Cunha and Reid Carleton clinched the doubles point for 14th-ranked Duke in a 7-0 win over No. 24 Michigan. Cunha, a native of Jau, Brazil, owns a 17-2 record in singles with an 8-1 record over ranked opponents (including the fall season). In doubles he is 16-2 with Carleton, including 5-2 against ranked duos.
Cunha has won 19 consecutive regular-season dual matches dating back to Jan. 31, 2010. This marks the seventh time in his career that Cunha has been named the ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. He received the honor six times as a freshman last season.
