Blue Devils Set to Begin USTA/ITA Regionals
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Blue Devils women’s tennis team is set to begin the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Carolina Regional Championship on Friday at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. The tournament began on Thursday with qualifying matches, and will continue Friday-Sunday with the main draw.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championship brings together the top women’s tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina and serves as the qualifying tournament for the ITA National Indoors Nov.8-11 in New York, N.Y.
The Blue Devils are coming off a tough outing at the Riviera All-American Sept. 29-Oct. 7 in which they went 6-8 in singles play and 7-3 in doubles action. The highlight of the week was the performance of the doubles team of sophomore Beatrice Capra and junior Hanna Mar. The 19th-ranked duo went 4-1 on the week to advance to the championship match collecting wins over three ranked opponents including third-ranked Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting, 8-5 in the second round.
“We have gotten a good two weeks in after All-American, and have been working on some different things,” said head coach Jamie Ashworth. “We were not too thrilled with our singles results out there, so we have spent a lot of time on point play, and different situations in points, so hopefully that can carry over to how we play and we can get some better results.”
In the singles main draw on Friday, No. 27 Marianne Jodoin is set to face Romy Kolzer of Clemson, while No. 35 Mar is slated to face Nicole Martinez of N.C. State. Senior Mary Clayton is schedule to play Andressa Garcia of Winthrop, while sophomores Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland are slated to face Ekin Gunaysu (Winthrop) and Alica Garcia (Winthrop) respectively.
In the doubles draw, both Blue Devil tandems received first round byes in the tournament. Senior Mary Clayton and sophomore Annie Mulholland will face Tristen Dewar and Romy Kolzer of Clemson while Mar and sophomore Ester Goldfeld will play Nicole Martinez and Christy Sipes of North Carolina State.
“The more matches we play, the better we are going to be,” said Ashworth. “Everyone has had a bunch of matches now, and we have been able to work on specific things that each individual has needed to work on in match play, simulating it in practice and seeing what they do in pressure situations. No matter how much we do in practice, it is hard to fake that actual match pressure. We have spent more time in the last week in point play stuff than we usually do so we will see if it pays off.”
