Nestor Briceño
Coming off its second straight Atlantic 10 title and its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, the George Washington men's tennis team has added Nestor Briceño to its staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2012-13 season.
"Coach Briceño is another reason why George Washington men's tennis is headed in the direction of continued success," Coach Munoz said. "Coming from NCAA Division I Florida, he brings with him the playing experience and ability of what it takes to be a top-10 team. Nestor will be a tremendous help to our program because he knows what it takes to compete at the next level. WithRodrigo Bricenostill on board, I am excited to see the team break through this year."
Coach Briceño last served as the top assistant coach of the Princeton men's tennis team during the 2008-09 season, where the Tigers saw a two-win improvement in league play from the previous season and landed two players on the All-Ivy teams. During his time at Princeton, Coach Briceño was responsible for player development and the restructuring of team dynamics, in addition to player recruitment both nationally and internationally. He also monitored Princeton's academic progress throughout the season.
"I am very excited and thankful for the opportunity to join the GW men's tennis coaching staff," said Coach Briceño. "Coach Munoz has established an incredible history with this program and I look forward to continuing the winning tradition. I hope to bring the lessons that I have learned as a tennis student-athlete and as a coach to GW and become an instrumental part of the team's continuing success."
Coach Briceño, who graduated magna cum laude from Florida in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in political science, recently completed his juris doctorate degree from the Alabama School of Law in May 2012. A standout for the Florida men's tennis team, he was three-year captain and a two-time All-Southeastern Conference honoree while also achieving NCAA Division I All-America honors.
Entering his collegiate career with a No.800 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranking during the 2004-05 season, Coach Briceño helped the Gators claim the SEC regular-season and tournament titles before advancing to the NCAA semifinals. The following year, Coach Briceño saw Florida reach the No. 1 spot on the national team poll. In 2008 Coach Briceño qualified for the NCAA Sweet Sixteen Singles Tournament and was dubbed All-America. He closed out his stellar career at Florida with 104 career singles victories - ranking him fifth all-time - and 170 combined singles and doubles victories - good enough for eighth all-time.
In addition to his coaching experience at Princeton, Coach Briceño spent time at the Rick Macci Tennis Academy teaching tennis to 70 teenagers. He also served as the chief director for 50 non-English speaking athletes.
A native of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Coach Briceño is fluent in Spanish and was a Dean's List and SEC Honor Roll selection every year as a student-athlete at Florida. He currently resides in Washington, D.C.
