Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University head men’s and women’s tennis coach Michael Cabana announces the signings of Kelli Ferguson (Charlotte, N.C.) to study and play tennis at Wingate University. Miss Ferguson will join the Bulldogs for the 2010 season.
The daughter of Mark and Julie Ferguson, Kelli Ferguson played number one singles for Northwest Cabarrus High School. A four-year letter winner, Ferguson’s coach was Andy Highsmith.
Her awards would fill several trophy cases. A four-time team MVP, Ferguson was North Piedmont Conference Player of the Year three times and an All-Conference selection four years in a row. A team captain as a senior, she finished in the top four in the region and the top 16 in the state each year she competed for the Northwest Cabarrus Trojans.
Ferguson set the North Piedmont Conference individual record for most wins in a career. She lost only one NPC match in four years at Northwest Cabarrus. In addition, Ferguson and her Trojan teammates won the conference championship during her freshman and sophomore seasons. Northwest Cabarrus won the district title during Ferguson’s freshman campaign.
In addition to her high school achievements, Ferguson is listed in the top 10 in the North Carolina USTA rankings. She competes in USTA sanctioned tournaments.
Ferguson is the 2009 DAR Citizen for Northwest Cabarrus High School. In addition, she was a Marshal during the 2008 commencement exercises at Northwest. She won the Yearbook Award and the Outstanding Spanish Student Award as well.

Wingate University is ranked number three among NCAA Division II Academic All-America® producing schools in the 2000’s with 30 honorees during this millennium. Only Pittsburg State (Kan.) University and Truman State (Mo.) University have produced more Academic All-America® honorees during this time period. Wingate’s 39 Academic All-America® honorees (lifetime) is tops among all SAC schools.
