Fanselow and Tearney Exit NCAA Singles Championship
Wednesday, 05/23/2012

ATHENS, Ga. – After the Pepperdine men’s tennis squad made an incredible run at the team championships, it wasn’t in the cards for Sebastian Fanselow and Finn Tearney, who competed today in the NCAA Singles Championship. Both made an early exit from the 64-player singles bracket, and suffered first round losses.

Fanselow (Essen, German/Kaplan College Prep), who on Tuesday was named the ITA National Player to Watch, concludes his junior season with a 31-8 overall singles record. He finished dual play on an 18-match win streak and was instrumental in the Waves 4-3 upset victory against hometown favorite Georgia in the quarterfinals of the team championships.

The reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year fell to Bob van Overbeek, 6-3, 6-4. Fanselow fell behind two breaks in the second set, before earning a break back and holding serve to put the score at 4-5. Although he nearly broke van Overbeek once again to knot the score at 5-all, the Florida player was able to hold on for the win.

The Waves’ other representative in the singles tournament was Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College), who fell to Auburn’s Andreas Mies, 6-2, 6-3.

Tearney finishes the season with a 25-15 overall singles record.

Tearney will get a chance at retribution against Mies tomorrow, when he and doubles partner Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico/San Juan Educational School) play Mies and Alexander Stamchev in the opening round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team are also slated to compete in the doubles championship. The duo takes on Texas A&M’s Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Sun Wen on the courts of the Dan Magill Tennis Center.

The men’s team (27-7) reached the semifinals of the NCAA Team Championship. The Waves opened the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Tulsa before facing Georgia on its home court in the quarterfinals. Pepperdine won an exciting doubles point before edging the Bulldogs in singles to win 4-3. In the semifinals, which began outdoors before moving inside due to rain and lightning, Pepperdine fell to #2-ranked Virginia 4-1.
