Waves Voted No. 1 in WCC Preseason Poll

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's tennis team was chosen to finish first in the 2013 West Coast Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the head coaches within the WCC. The Waves also had two players named to the preseason all-conference team alongside BYU, San Diego, San Francisco, and Santa Clara.

Reigning 2012 WCC Champion Pepperdine received the maximum 64 total points after earning first place votes from all the men's head coaches around the conference. 2011 WCC Champion San Diego was chosen to finish second this season with 57 points and the remaining first place vote. Santa Clara, led by preseason all-conference selection junior John Lamble, was chosen to finish third in the WCC with 47 points.

Second year WCC member BYU was picked fourth in the conference poll with 45 points followed by San Francisco and Saint Mary’s. Of the top six teams in the preseason poll, four are currently ranked in the top-50 in the ITA rankings include Pepperdine at #7.

The men's preseason all-conference team includes familiar names from last season's all-conference list in Pepperdine seniors Sebastian Fanselow (2012 WCC Player of the Year) and Finn Tearney (All-WCC First Team in singles and doubles), BYU junior Patrick Kawka (Honorable Mention), Santa Clara junior John Lamble (Second Team), San Diego junior Clarke Spinosa (Second Team), and San Francisco senior Thai Tu (Second Team).

This past fall, Fanselow was the runner-up at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship, where he was also recognized as the USTA/ITA Sportsmanship award winner. Fanselow earned WCC Player of the Month honors in November 2012 and concluded his fall campaign with a 6-2 record. Spinosa earned WCC Doubles Honors in November 2012 after taking home the doubles title with partner Thibaut Visy at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships. Lamble finished the fall with a 5-5 singles mark and was ranked No. 65 in the January ITA ranking.



This spring will mark the second season all nine WCC teams will compete in a single round robin conference schedule. For the complete schedule, click here.

Pepperdine’s next match is schedule for Sunday, Feb. 3 at home against Texas. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. and free burritos will be served to the first 50 students.
