Arkansas junior tennis standout Adrians Zguns has been named the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award nominee.

The Rafael Osuna Award goes to a player who displays sportsmanship, character, excellent academics and has had outstanding tennis accomplishments.

“This is a tremendous honor for Adrians,” UA head coach Robert Cox says. “He’s a class individual who is a terrific representative of this university on and off the court. He’s won a lot of big matches for us and he’s not finished. He’s still playing this year and we’re looking for another big year from him next year when he’s a senior.”

Zguns went 17-12 this season in singles, but he’s not finished. He and doubles partner Rohan Gajjar, also a junior, are playing in the NCAA individual doubles tournament on May 26 at College Station, Texas. The duo is 11-12, but they won the ITA Central Region championship and own three wins over ranked opponents. They are ranked No. 31 in the country. Gajjar, who is 21-14, is also playing in the NCAA individual singles tournament.

Zguns went 6-5 against the Southeastern Conference this season and was 12-8 at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots.

Last year, Zguns, who is from Liepafa, Latvia, earned the ITA Central Region Player to Watch award after going 36-10, reaching the round of 32 at the NCAA individual tournament, and helping the Razorbacks reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and finish the season with a No. 24 national ranking. In 2003, Zguns was the Central Region’s Rookie of the Year after posting a 24-9 record.
