Edine van Beusekom won in three sets in her singles match against UTEP, Friday afternoon.
El Paso, Texas – The Aggie women’s tennis team can take the bragging rights for the season as New Mexico State defeated the UTEP Miners 5-2, Friday afternoon at the El Paso Youth Tennis Center in the Battle of I-10. The Aggies end the 2006 regular season with a mark of 11-8 and will defend their perfect 4-0 conference mark later this month at the WAC Championships.
After losing two of the three doubles match to fall behind early at 0-1, the women picked up the slack in singles play and won five of the six matches to earn the 5-2 win. The NMSU win in doubles was at the number two position where Isabelle Mignot (Bourg-Les Valence, France) and Nicole Fintell (Santa Teresa, N.M.) downed Megan Pritchard and Sandra Spirta 8-5.
UTEP used their momentum to take the first singles match from Mignot, but the Aggies regrouped and won the five remaining matches to earn five team points. At the number two position, Edine van Beusekom (Amsterdam, Netherlands) defeated Katherine Palider (6-3, 5-7, 6-1) and Fintell followed in the number three positi8no with a straight sets win over Pritchard (6-2, 6-3). Then in the four, five and six spots, Anne Fagegaltier (Montreaiuf, France) dropped Spirta in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), Celine du Fossé overpowered Danielle King in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) and Paulina Zuniga (Guadalupe, Mexico) won a three-set match over Amber Brightly (2-6, 6-3, 6-0).
“We had a fabulous match by several of our players today,” Aggie head coach Don Ball said. “At number two, van Beusekom fought hard to win while playing with an injured arm that she can barely lift and Paulina, who has had a solid year but has struggled lately, won her match 6-0 in the third set. That was two real strong matches from those girls and it’s nice to get back on the winning track. We struggled a bit in doubles and that will be our emphasis for the next couple of weeks getting ready for conference and this win was exciting for us because UTEP has been playing really well lately.”
The Aggie women concluded their 2006 regular season and will battle again April 20-23 at the WAC Championships.
