Third-seeded Haythem Abid falls in the semifinals on Monday
Bruin senior Mathieu Dehaine earned a spot in the singles final of the ITA Regional Championships, as he posted a straight-set semifinal victory over teammate Harel Srugo at UCLA on Monday.
Dehaine, unseeded in the 128-player singles draw, pulled off the upset with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Srugo, the tournament’s No. 2 seed. The other semifinal was played over at USC on Monday and that match featured third-seeded Haythem Abid of UCLA and top-seeded Andre Begemann of Pepperdine. Begemann ended up winning that match 6-2, 6-1.
Begemann and Dehaine will meet in Tuesday’s final at 1:30 p.m. That match will be at UCLA’s Los Angeles Tennis Center. The winner will earn a spot in the main draw of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, Nov. 1-4 at the Racquet Club of Columbus. Ohio State is the host school of that tournament.
Pepperdine was the host school of the ITA Regionals, however ongoing fires in the Malibu area forced the relocation of the remainder of the tournament.
