The California Baptist University men’s tennis doubles’ team of Oliver Andrzejczu and Carlos Cirne-Lima defeated the doubles’ team of Marco Foelz and Vicente Joli from Fresno Pacific 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 Saturday to claim the doubles’ championship at the 2008 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament.

The regional title is the first-ever for CBU in the long history of the ITA regional event, and with the win Andrzejczu and Cirne-Lima have now qualified for the ITA National Small College Championships Presented by the USTA and hosted by the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center Oct. 16-19 in Mobile, Ala.

The championships include regional winners from other ITA/NAIA tournaments across the country, and if the Lancer duo wins that they will then qualify for the ITA “Super Bowl” of Small College Tennis, which includes the champions from the NCAA Division II and III as well as the NAIA and junior college levels.

Andrzejczu and Cirne-Lima began the weekend, defeated Trent Brown and Kenny Williams, 8-5, in the opening round and then downed Fresno Pacific’s Fabio Silva and Maxime Adam, 8-4, to advance to the semifinals.

In the semis, they downed the team of Ron Chow and Daniel Moore from Azusa Pacific, 8-4, and needed to go the distance against Joli and Wheeler to claim the program’s first title.
