SPRINGFIELD, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy captured their first-ever Colonial States Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Team Championship, as the Griffins prevailed over Cabrini, 5-2, in the finals on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Griffins earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Team Tournament which begins the weekend of May 8th, 2009.
In the first matches of the contest, Gwynedd won two of the three doubles where they then took three of the six in singles in the best-of-nine match format.
After wins at #3 singles by Chelsea Donde (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. South), and a hard-fought victory at #2 singles by Alana Rumpel (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic), freshman Amy Rock (Warrington, Pa./C. B. South) sewed up the championship with her 6-3, 6-1 win at #6 singles.
The championship is also the first for the conference under its new name.
Selections for the NCAA Championship will be made on May 4th, 2009.
