The Wake Forest men's tennis team has always had a flair for drama and in Friday's Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfinal the team certainly delivered, taking the match down to the wire where sophomore Jonathan Wolff clinched the 4-3 win with a 7-5 second set victory over the ACC Freshman of the Year. Wake Forest will (19-8) advance to the semifinals, facing 2-seed Miami on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will broadcast over the internet on tape delay at ACCSelect.com.

Virginia Tech took the doubles point with a 2-1 margin. Cory Parr and Steven Forman took a quick 8-1 over Patrick Daciek and Nicolas DeRobles at No. 1, but the Deacons couldn't pull wins at 2 and 3.

Parr and Forman were also the first competitors to take singles wins, winning at Nos. 1 and 2 in straight sets. David Hopkins put the Deacons up 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sebastian Jacques at No. 4.

Just as the sun was setting at Cary Tennis Park action really started to heat up.

Jason Morgenstern fell behind 6-2 in the first set, but was staging a rally in the second, tying Patrick Daciek at 5-5. Daciek pulled ahead and posted a 7-5 victory to set Virginia Tech behind by just one win (3-2).

At Court 5 Iain Atkinson dropped his first set to Brandon Corace 6-4 and the second set came to a tiebreaker. Jacques had a match point opportunity with a 6-4 breaker advantage, but Atkinson was able to stay alive with the next point (6-5). Jacques then hit a lengthy return that just hit line and squeaked past Atkinson to take the win and knot the overall match score.

The raucous crowd shifted all attention to Court 3, where Wake's Jon Wolff and VT's Luka Somen played for the match win. Wolff took a 6-4 win in the first set, but fell behind early in the second set (2-3). Wolff tied the match at 5-5 and broke Somen with a perfect long shot that just kissed the line to move ahead 6-5. Somen took the first points but Wolff climbed back from a 0-30 deficit to clinch the Wake Forest win with a botched serve return by Somen.
