ATLANTA-----University of Georgia sophomore Nadja Gilchrist cruised in to the semifinals of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Championships Sunday.
Gilchrist dispatched Diana Nakic (Georgia State) 6-2,6-3. Gilchrist, who is ranked No. 43, improved to 6-2 on the year with the win over the 62nd-ranked Nakic. In the semifinals Monday, Gilchrist will face the fourth seed in 24th-ranked Noemie Scharle (Florida State). The FSU sophomore is 5-4 on the year with three of her losses coming in three sets to ranked opponents. However at this event, Scharle’s last three wins have come in three sets.
“Nadja is having a great tournament,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “She has worked on her mental game, controlling her shots, and she is putting it all together. We hope it continues because she is playing really well right now.”
The semifinals and finals will be played Monday on the Georgia Tech campus. The singles and doubles champions earn an invitation to the ITA National Indoor Championships next month in New Haven, Conn. The elite event, slated for Nov. 5-8, is the second collegiate grand slam event of the season. Winners from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country plus at-large selections will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.
In the doubles quarterfinals, the Stetson duo of Valentina Galbarini and Carolina de los Santos posted an 8-6 win over the sixth-ranked tandem of Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson.
