Tennessee junior John-Patrick Smith earned a victory in the first round in singles, and both doubles teams progressed to the quarterfinals Thursday at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in New Haven, Conn.
Smith, the tournament’s top seed, defeated Amit Inbar of UCLA 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 32. He improved his record to a team-leading 14-2 and matches up against North Carolina’s Clay Donato in the second round Friday afternoon. Donato is ranked No. 16 nationally, but Smith is 6-0 against ranked opponents this fall.
Smith and senior Davey Sandgren, also the top-ranked doubles team, won 8-3 over Utah’s Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding in the round of 16. With the victory, Smith and Sandgren became the fifth doubles team in UT history to record 50 wins. They improved to 11-2 this season.
Sandgren and Smith play Texas A&M’s Jeff Dadamo and Austin Krajicek in the quarterfinals Friday at 9 a.m.
Junior Boris Conkic and freshman Rhyne Williams extended their doubles winning streak to six matches with an 8-2 victory over Yale’s Calvin Bennett and Joel Samaha. The Tennessee duo faces Antoine Benneteau and Alexandre Lecroix of Florida at 9 a.m.
Benneteau and Lecroix upset No. 2-seeded Aleksey Bessonov and Olekesandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State 9-8 in their first-round match.
