Texas Tech’s top player falls in straight sets
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech’s No. 25 Raony Carvalho lost his opening-round match today at the 2009 ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New Haven, Conn.
Carvalho fell in straight sets to No. 1 Oleksandr Nedovyesov (Oklahoma State), 6-3, 7-6 (7). Carvalho had a 4-1 lead in the second set before being forced into a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Carvalho had two set points before Nedovyesov claimed the match by winning the tiebreaker 9-7.
“A few points could have made the game go either way,” said head coach Tim Siegel. “Ray played better today than the other four times he has played Oleksandr. This was Ray’s most complete match against him.”
Carvalho will now drop to the consolation bracket on Friday. The consolation draw will be announced later tonight.
