LOS ANGELES - Junior Holden Seguso remains UCLA's last hope for a singles title at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships, as he posted a straight-set victory in Friday's quarterfinals at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Seguso, the tournament's No. 3 seed, pulled out a competitive first set against Pepperdine's Finn Tearney, winning 7-5. He then cruised in the second set, dropping just one game to take the match 7-5, 6-1. Awaiting Seguso in the semifinals will be second-seeded Bassam Beidas, also from Pepperdine. Beidas beat USC's Matt Kecki, 6-1, 6-4.
UCLA's two other representatives in the quarterfinals didn't fare so well Friday, as Alex Brigham fell to USC's Daniel Nguyen, 6-2, 6-3, and Ahmed Ismail lost to USC's JT Sundling, 6-3, 7-6.
Doubles play began Friday and UCLA's Matt Brooklyn and Kallim Stewart won two matches to advance to the semifinals. Nick Meister and Seguso were playing their second-round match later in the day.
