Washington put two players in the semis of the fall’s two major national events.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Denise Dy had her run in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships stalled in the semifinals today. Dy fell to fourth-ranked Jana Juricova of California, but still proved herself as one of the top players in college tennis over the past several days.

This was the second-straight major national tournament that a Husky woman reached the semifinals. Junior Venise Chan made the semis at October’s ITA All-American Championships, and also reached the quarterfinals at this weekend’s tourney.

Today’s semi was a rematch of the Northwest Regional Final, which Dy had won 6-3, 6-3 over Juricova. Dy had played six sets of tennis Friday, while Juricova needed just four, and the difference on court manifested itself today. After taking a 4-3 first set lead, Dy struggled and Juricova took control, winning the final three games to win the first set, 6-4. Juricova then pulled away in the second set for a 6-1 win.

“Denise just hit the wall mentally and physically mid-way through the first set. She had played a few more sets than Juricova, and Juricova just caught fire and did not miss a ball,” said assistant coach Damon Coupe. “But Denise is still really proud of her play and she should be very proud of her fall. The hard work she put in over the summer has paid off.”

The next action for Dy and Chan will be the start of the team dual match season in January. The rest of the Husky women are still competing this weekend at the San Diego State Fall Classic.
