KNOVILLE, Tenn. – Three members of the Tennessee women’s tennis team gave good performances on day one of the St. Mary’s Tournament at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Knoxville, Tenn. Senior Zsófia Zubor and juniors Maria Sorbello and Rosalía Alda combined for four wins in five matches.

The Orange and White kicked off the day with doubles. Zubor and Alda teamed up to win their Flight One match against East Tennessee State’s Yevgeniya Stupak and Kelly Hotzhausen, 8-4.  Due to the odd numbers for UT, Sorbello combined with Yuiri Nomoto from Middle Tennessee State to compete in Flight Two. The Sorbello/Nomoto team faced another Buccaneer team of Paula Jaime and Karina Kedzo. It was a back-and-forth match that went to extra games, but Sorbello and Nomoto came out on top with a 9-7 score.

The Big Orange returned to the court in the afternoon for singles play. Sorbello defeated Vanderbilt’s Chelsea Preeg in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2 in Flight One. Zubor also took home a victory, but it took three sets to down Marietta Bigus, also from Vanderbilt. Zubor dropped the first set 5-7, but rolled easily through the next two, 6-1, 6-2 for the match win.

Alda, competing in Flight Two, fell to the Commodores’ Catherine Newman in three, hard-fought sets. Newman grabbed the first set 4-6, but Alda responded by winning 6-1 in the second. However, the third and final set went to Newman, 3-6.

Tennessee is slated to begin singles play at 9 a.m. Saturday against Wake Forest, followed by doubles at noon.

Scoring for the tournament will be based on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 format for singles with the most points going to first-flight winners and the fewest to the sixth-flight victors. Points for doubles will be 3-2-1 based upon which flight the team is in as well. If players from two squads join to form a winning doubles teams, their respective teams will split the points. Upon the conclusion of the tournament, the top three individuals and a team champion will be crowned.
