Longhorns take advantage of singles sweep to improve to 6-1 in conference play.

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 20 Texas (11-4, 6-1 Big 12) collected victories in all six singles matches and posted a 6-1 victory over visiting Nebraska (17-4, 6-2 Big 12) Friday afternoon at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

With the lingering threat of inclement weather, the two teams elected to play the singles matches first.  Sophomore Krista Damico put the Horns on the board at third singles, as she posted a 7-5, 6-1 win over Wiveca Swarting.  Senior Sarah Lancaster staked Texas to a 2-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Stefanie Weinstein at fourth singles.

Larsson finished her match at sixth singles just moments after Lancaster finished and put the Longhorns up by a 3-0 count when she knocked off Jennifer Holmberg by a 6-1, 7-5 count.  UT junior Maggie Mello produced the match-clinching the point for the Longhorns at fifth singles, where she dealt Janine Weinreich a 6-4, 7-5 defeat.

Texas’ Vanja Corovic and Aeriel Ellis went on to win in their third sets at the second and first singles slots, respectively, to complete the singles sweep.  After dropping her first set to Nebraska’s Madeleine Geibert at second singles, Corovic rallied for a 7-5 second set win before outlasting Geibert in a third-set match tiebreak, 10-6.  After splitting the first two sets with Nebraska’s Mary Weatherholt at first singles, Ellis held on for a 6-4 third-set win to complete the single sweep.

Texas’s Amanda Craddock teamed up with Damico to post an 8-2 win at first doubles over NU’s Geibert and Weinstein, but the Cornhuskers took the remaining two matches to claim the doubles point.

Texas hosts its final regular-season home match on Saturday when it takes on Iowa State at noon.  Seniors Vanja Corovic and Sarah Lancaster will be recognized prior to the match.
