College Tennis News - Arizona State Opens Dual Play With A Win

The Sun Devil women's tennis team started the weekend with a solid victory, sweeping the Iowa State Cyclones 7-0 in their first dual match of the season. In doubles action, Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons defeated Jenna Langhorst and Marie-Christine Chartier 8-2 for the first doubles win of the day.

"Ashlee and I played really aggressive. We fed off of each other and I think we both set each other up," said Sianna Simmons. "It was hard to break off from them in the beginning but we pulled away and in the end played our aggressive style of play in order to get the win."

Michelle Brycki and Hannah James got off to a great start and didn't slow down, dropping one game in their win over Iowa State's Erin Karonis and Liza Wischer, earning the doubles point for the Devils. Jacqueline Cako and Kelcy McKenna completed doubles play with a 8-6 victory over Tessa Lang and Maria Fernanda Macedo.

In singles action, senior Kelcy McKenna garnered her first win of the 2011 season, topping Erin Karonis 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Ashlee Brown was next off the court with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Marie-Christine Chartier. Junior Michelle Brycki clinched the win for the Devils with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tessa Lang.

Playing in the first dual match of her career, freshman Jacqueline Cako defeated Maria Fernada Macedo 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Hannah James won her first set 6-1 before dropping a tough second set 5-7 to Jenna Langhorst. She topped Langhorst 10-4 in the match-breaker to earn the win. Junior Sianna Simmons ended the day with a 6-3, 7-6 (1) win at the No. 6 spot.

Head Coach Sheila McInerney said, "I thought we played well and composed ourselves well and hopefully we'll use this match to prepare ourselves for Sunday. Overall, it was a good start."

The Sun Devils take on UC Davis at the Whiteman Tennis Center on Sunday at 11:00am.
