College Tennis News - Pepperdine Comes From Behind to Win Season Opener Versus San Diego State

MALIBU, Calif. – The #26-ranked Pepperdine women’s tennis team overcame an early deficit to defeat #53 San Diego State 4-3 in the season opener. Freshman Lorraine Guillermo clinched the win for the Waves with a three-set triumph in her dual-season debut.

With the Santa Ana winds blowing in full force, the Waves got off to a rocky start in doubles. Although Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre) earned a victory in the No. 1 match, SDSU was able to win on courts two and three to take the point.

Issara made a big statement in singles, blanking Emma Cioffi 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 match to put Pepperdine on the board.

Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Creekside Christian HS/UCLA) posted a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Alicia Aguilar, but Julie Wais knotted the score at two after defeating Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) on court one.

Sophomore Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) opened her dual campaign with a straight-set victory against Roxanne Ellison to put the lead back in Pepperdine’s favors.

With two matches left undecided, the Waves needed just one more win to secure the team victory. Both Guillermo and Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) had dropped the first set, but came back with wins in their respective second sets to force a third.

Guillermo found her rhythm and cruised to a 6-1 win in the third frame to clinch the match.

Colffer would end up succumbing to defeat in the super tiebreaker after the match had already been decided.

Next up for the Waves is home match against Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, Feb. 1. First serve is slated for 1:30 p.m.
