ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis signing class of 2012 has been ranked No. 1 in the nation by TennisRecruiting.Net in an updated poll released Tuesday.

Closely following Georgia Tech are a pair of ACC counterparts, Virginia at No. 2 and North Carolina at No. 3. Vanderbilt and Stanford round out the top five. The complete poll can be found at http://tennisrecruiting.net/article.asp?id=1352.

Head Coach Bryan Shelton and assistant coach Alison Silverio will welcome Catherine Harrison of Germantown, Tenn., Megan Kurey of Alpharetta, Ga., Kendal Woodard of Stockbridge, Ga., and Natasha Prokhnevska of Wilmington, Del., beginning with the 2012-13 season.

“It is nice to have this incoming class get some good recognition,” Shelton said. “It says a lot about what they have already accomplished. This will be the core of our program for the next four years. With hard work I believe we can accomplish some great things together.”

The class has already accomplished some impressive feats on the tennis courts and in the classroom. Harrison, Kurey and Woodard are all considered blue-chip prospects by TennisRecruiting.Net and Prokhnevska is a five-star prospect.

Harrison is ranked as the No. 1 player in the State of Tennessee and the No. 10 player in the country. She competed in the 2011 Wimbledon Girls Singles Championship, advancing to the second round, and played with fellow American Christina Makarova in the 2011 Wimbledon Girls Doubles Championship.

Kurey is ranked No. 4 in the State of Georgia and No. 33 nationally. She was not only a standout tennis player, but excelled in the classroom as well at Centennial High School. A four-year letterwinner, she earned the Coaches’ Award in 2009 and was team MVP in 2011. Academically, Kurey was a scholar-athlete all three years of her varsity career, and was selected to the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society as a junior and senior.

Woodard is slated as the third-best prospect in Georgia and ranked 22nd nationally. Woodard tallied a 47-21 record in 2010-11 and an exceptional 12-3 record against TennisRecruiting.Net five-star prospects. Woodard advanced to the round of 16 at the 2011 Girls 18 USTA National Championships.

Rounding out the class is Natasha Prokhnevska, the 31st-ranked player nationally and the top prospect in the State of Delaware. A five-star prospect by TennisRecruiting.Net, Prokhnesvska tallied a remarkable 54-16 record in 2010-11 and an equally impressive 22-4 mark against fellow five-star ranked players. She advanced to the round of 16 at the USTA Winter National Championships in Dec. 2010, and was equally successful academically. She was admitted to the Cum Laude Society for those in the top 10 percent of their class and also a member of the Spanish Honor Society.
