Greensboro, N.C. – Georgia Tech senior Kevin King has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s 2012 All-ACC Academic Team, announced Thursday by Commissioner John Swofford.

King, who will graduate this fall with a degree in mechanical engineering, finished the season ranked 26th nationally in singles and teamed with Juan Spir to form the nation’s No. 4-ranked doubles team. Playing on the No. 1 singles court, King posted a 28-10 record, including six wins over ranked opponents. He closed his career at Tech with an 80-41 record, including a 25-15 mark against ACC opposition.

A three-time All-ACC selection, King joined Spir in earning All-America honors for his play in doubles. King played in 87 winning doubles matches at Georgia Tech, eclipsing the previous record of 82.

“I’m honored and humbled to be recognized in this way,” said King. “I’m very grateful to Coach Thorne and our coaching staff, as well as our academic support staff for all they have done to help me be successful at Georgia Tech.”

King is a four-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team and was named 2012 Capital One Academic Third-Team All-America in addition to earning All-District Academic Team honors. The Peachtree City, Ga., native made the dean’s list six times at Georgia Tech and twice earned Faculty Honors (4.0 GPA) in the spring of 2010 and fall of 2011.

“Kevin has earned a lot of honors this spring, and this is a very special honor for him,” said Tech head coach Kenny Thorne. “He has been a tremendous representative of Georgia Tech, and I appreciate everything he has done for this program. Coupled with Jillian O’Neill from our women’s team being named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, this is a tremendous tribute to both of them as individuals and to these programs and what we strive for.”

This is the second straight year a Georgia Tech All-American has also been named ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Guillermo Gomez, the Yellow Jackets’ all-time singles victory leader, was named both ACC Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year in men’s tennis last year.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

The 2012 All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis Team features three student athletes who also earned All-America honors this season – King, Duke’s Henrique Cunha and ACC Freshman of the Year Mitchell Frank of Virginia.

The All-ACC Academic Team also includes 11 student-athletes who were All-ACC selections, six that were honored at least once as ACC Player of the Week and eight that have earned All-ACC Academic honors on at least one previous occasion.  King, Boston College’s Akash Muppidi and Virginia Tech’s Luka Somen were each named to the team for the fourth time.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career.
