COLUMBUS, Ohio– Coming off a history-making season as Ohio State’s and the nation’s No. 1 doubles team in 2012, Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola have continued their success on the ITF Men’s Circuit this summer. In June, the pair won the Innisbrook ATP Futures Tournament in Innisbrook, Fla., as the No. 4 seed. En route to the title, the 2012 NCAA Doubles Champions downed No. 1 seed Ruben Gonzalez and Vahid Mirzadeh 7-6(2), 6-4 in the semifinals. Buchanan and Rola then knocked off No. 3 seed Keith-Patrick Crowley and Joshua Zavala 6-0, 6-2 in the final.

Rola, who concluded his sophomore year as a Buckeye as an NCAA singles championship semifinalist, also won the singles title in Innisbrook. The Ptuj, Slovenia, native defeated Luis David Martinez 6-2, 6-1 for the Futures title. It was nearly an all-Buckeye final, but Martinez advanced on a walkover in the semifinals before losing to Rola. Unseeded, Rola downed three seeded players, including No. 1 seed Greg Jones 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Alex Bogdanovic 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.

The previous week in Indian Harbour, Fla., Buchanan had more success, winning the singles tournament and advancing to the semifinals with Rola in the doubles competition. The New Albany, Ohio, native who wrapped up his Buckeye career in May as a five-time All-American with 112 career doubles victories and 108 singles wins, won four of his five matches in straight-sets. His lone three-set match was vs. Rola in the quarterfinals. Buchanan was victorious 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-1. The fourth-seed in the doubles bracket, Buchanan and Rola dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to No. 2 seed Gonzalez and Darian King in the semifinals.

Nearly a week ago, Rola, a three-time All-American, returned to Europe where he showcased his talents, winning the doubles title as the No. 3 seed with Tomislav Ternar and advancing to the final of the singles championship in Austria. The duo won three consecutive matches en route to the title, including a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the final vs. Stefan Hirn and Sebastian Stiefelmeyer. Before encountering No. 1 Marc Rath in the final where he lost in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, Rola downed a pair of ranked opponents in No. 6 Maxim Dubarenco 6-2, 6-1 in the second round and No. 8 Lukas Jastraunig 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Buchanan also posted a successful weekend as he won the doubles title with former Virginia Cavalier Drew Courtney in Rochester, N.Y. The third-seeded tandem downed No. 2 seed Sekou Bangoura and Vahid Mirzadeh 6-3, 6-0. Before the win in the finals, Buchanan and Courtney upset No. 1 seed Ruben Gonzalez and Michael Venus 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals. In the singles championship, Buchanan beat No. 2 seed Clement Reix in the semifinals 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 as the No. 7 seed before falling to No. 1 Alex Bogdanovic 6-3, 6-4 in the final.
Buchanan and Rola made NCAA history in May when they became the first doubles tandem to win all three major collegiate championships in one season – D’Novo/ITA All-America Championships, USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships and NCAA Championships. Buchanan and Rola went 14-0 during the three championship runs and for the season amassed a 36-4 overall record. Additionally, the pair went 18-1 vs. nationally-ranked opponents.
