AUSTIN, Texas – Texas junior Elizabeth Begley and sophomore Annat Rabinovich (rah-BEE-no-vitch) were unable to stave off defeat in the finals of their respective singles draws Sunday at the Longhorn Invitational.
In the finals of the “Orange” singles draw, Begley kept the pressure on SMU’s Aleksandra Malyarchikova in the first set before yielding the first set to her opponent, 6-4. Malyarchikova took the second set, 6-2 to win the match and claim the “Orange” singles draw. Begley finishes the tournament with three singles victories to go with a pair of wins from last weekend’s Duke Invitational.
“Through a long stretch in that first set, Elizabeth played the best I’ve seen her play against that type of opponent,” UT head coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. “We just need to build on that, because that’s the kind of player she’ll see next weekend (at the ITA All-American Championship)."
In the finals of the “Black” singles draw, Rabinovich and Tulane’s Ipek Birol needed a tiebreaker to decide the first set, and Birol prevailed, 7-0. Rabinovich took the second set, 6-1, but Birol broke Rabinovich’s serve midway through the final set and held on for a 6-4 third-set win to claim the “Black” singles flight.
“Annat played some great tennis all weekend, and it was nice to see her get through to the final,” Fendick-McCain said. “She certainly had some chances today, and her opponent produced a lot of good shots. She raised the level of her game there. It would have been nice to see Annat win that singles draw, but she has three great wins under her belt.”
Texas resumes fall tournament play on Saturday, Sept. 29 when it competes in the pre-qualifying draws at the ITA All-American Championship near Los Angeles. Noel Scott, Lina Padegimaite (pah-day-gee-MY-tay) and Elizabeth Begley will compete in the event’s pre-qualifying singles draw.
