TULSA, Okla. – Baylor men’s tennis junior Robert Verzaal lost in three sets to be knocked out of the pre-qualifying draw of the ITA All-American Championships on Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

The native of Shreveport, La., faced Texas A&M’s Alberto Bautista in the second round of action and fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Verzaal, who is now 2-2 in fall singles play, had an opportunity to win the first set against the bracket’s ninth-seeded player, but an early break proved too much to overcome.

“Verzaal played two good sets,” assistant coach Dominik Mueller said. “He did the things we have been working on in practice and he executed the plan we established before the match. He had a chance to go up early in the third set and then got away from the things he needed to do. I felt like the third set was a bit rushed.”

Verzaal was slated to play Joe Rogers of Mississippi in the first round on Saturday morning, but the Rebel player withdrew from the event to setup Verzaal’s match against Bautista.

As part of the pre-qualifying draw, Verzaal was attempting to advance through three rounds of play to make the qualifying draw of the event. Now the junior will play a back draw singles match on Sunday against an opponent to be determined to get some more work in on the court.

The rest of the Baylor contingent at the ITA All-American will begin play on Monday as sophomore Marko Krickovic and freshman Julian Lenz begin play in the qualifying singles draw. Krickovic will partner with Verzaal and Lenz will team with Mate Zsiga to take part in the qualifying doubles draw, which also begins on Monday.
